THE RENIASSANCE MAN
KOKO is a Los Angeles based and internationally exhibited artist. His work is primarily based in oil painting. There has been great anticipation for his upcoming collection of original oil paintings titled ‘Renaissance Series.’ The 2010 collection was inspired by ideas of the Renaissance and the cultural revival of the arts. The pieces explore human figures and spaces they inhabit as abstracted fields of geometric patterns and formal constructions. There is a fresh and bold use of color and shape to define a new and contemporary relevance, connecting to his viewers. His recent collection was previewed at the San Francisco Design Center to great acclamation and is debuting in its entirety in his hometown of La Canada.
The inspiration of his ‘Renaissance Series’ began with the first painting, the center of the collection: ‘Family Portrait.’ This piece tells the story of a family, inspiring and nurturing the arts and education in the city. This is an idea that transcends history or any particular time. The energy of the shapes, colors and figures create a unique and expressive composition, setting the perfect tone for the narrative.
Many of the pieces in the collection came from sketches Koko had developed from his travels to Florence, the origin of the Renaissance and the profound influences of this city. Each painting in the collection is a piece of the story that sparked a revolution in art beyond its birthplace. Koko has been greatly influence by the dynamism of the ‘city’ and its effects on the relevance of contemporary culture in art and architecture. The paintings in this collection symbolize the growth and development, much like the Renaissance itself.
Koko’s newest paintings are also greatly influenced by his talents as a practicing architectural designer. He currently holds a full-time design position with architect Frank Gehry in Los Angeles. He holds a Masters degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University, where he graduated with design excellence.
