Migirdic Givanian studied at the Academy of Art in Istanbul under the tutelage of the French painter Pierre Guillemet. In 1874, an encounter with Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, whose work he had long admired, inspired Givanian to align his oeuvre with that of the great master of marine painting. Born in Istanbul, Mekertich Givanian 1848 had a full life that was as difficult as it was interesting. He was, though, an idealist, a characteristic that was to leave an imprint on both his life and paintings
